Thomas De Bouvier, student on the Bachelor in Business programme

De Bouvier ThomasWHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE JOINING THE BACHELOR PROGRAMME?

Before joining the Bachelor in Business, I was studying STI2D (Technological Sciences for Engineering and Sustainable Development) specialising in Architecture and Construction.

BEFORE JOINING THE PROGRAMME, WHAT WAS YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE BACHELOR?

The programme offered by the Business School is fast-paced and based on the ‘real world’. It prepares students for the workplace and offers many internship opportunities.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE BACHELOR?

I found out from someone in my group of friends, who is a Bachelor in Business graduate.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO DO A BACHELOR? WHAT WERE YOUR OTHER OPTIONS?

I didn’t come from a business background and I had already specialised, so I had several options open to me: I could have enrolled in an engineering school to specialise in the construction industry or I could have joined a University Institute of Technology to study civil engineering.
However, I wanted to join the Bachelor in Business because I wanted to broaden my horizons and train in another area that interests me… business. What I liked was the pace of the course, with a lot of professional opportunities offering an overall package that, at the end of the programme, enables students to be operational as soon as they head into the workplace. Another important point I discovered with the Bachelor is that after the initial 3 years, you can join a Masters programme and continue your studies on a work-study track and even study for a double degree.

HOW DID YOU OBTAIN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME/THE SCHOOL?

I had a close look at the details on the School’s website as well as asking my graduate friend for information.

The ‘Passerelle Bachelor’ selective entrance test

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE ‘Passerelle Bachelor’?

I found out about the test via Excelia’s website in the information section about the Bachelor entry requirements.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS ENTRANCE TEST? DID YOU TAKE ANY OTHERS?

I have to admit that I only looked into the Passerelle Bachelor.

HOW DID THE ENTRANCE TEST GO?

I found it quite stressful because it was the first time I had studied subjects that were more business-based than scientific.

WERE YOU AT ALL WORRIED?

Not really. In general, the test went quite well and enabled me to achieve my goals.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THE TEST? THE WRITTEN EXAMS? THE ORALS?

On the internet, I bought a book of ‘Passerelle Bachelor’ past papers.
As for the orals, I am really lucky that I’m very relaxed, which enabled me to pass. I simply presented my professional project to the panel and explained why the Bachelor in Business was perfectly in line with it.

The Bachelor

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMME

The Bachelor in Business offered by Excelia Business School is a 3-year post-High School programme. Fellow students come from all walks of life. You study subjects that provide you with general knowledge and a solid foundation in business. The Bachelor in Business can be whatever you want it to be… it’s totally adaptable.

Depending on your choice of professional orientation, over the years, you can create your own programme by choosing different options: a work-study track, internships, expatriation, Humacité© project etc. Thanks to the Bachelor in Business programme management team, communication flows easily and really helps students to feel comfortable in their studies.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR PROGRAMME?

I think my programme is really interesting, rewarding, energetic and that it offers so many opportunities.

IS THE BACHELOR HOW YOU IMAGINED IT?

Yes, I don’t think I’ve noticed anything that has deviated from my initial perception of the programme.

EACH YEAR, YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CARRY OUT INTERNSHIPS OF VARYING LENGTHS, UNDERTAKE GROUP PROJECTS AND EVEN HEAD ABROAD… FOR EACH YEAR OF THE PROGRAMME, TELL US ABOUT AN EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE AND MAYBE ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE COMING YEAR/YEARS.

At the beginning of Year 1, after our first semester, we had the opportunity to do a one-month sales internship, the aim being to put into practice the techniques we had studied during that particular semester of the programme i.e. sales techniques. I was able to do my internship at Décathlon, in Puilboreau, in the ‘outdoor pursuits’ department. I loved this internship and was able to put the sales techniques I had learnt into good use. I was part of a team of 5, working different shifts. What I really enjoyed was the atmosphere in the store. As you may have noticed in this store, a sporty ambiance and good humour are evident within the sales teams. This was the perfect environment for me to feel at ease and face the Christmas sales period which, in Decathlon, is not necessarily synonymous with rest or relaxation. This internship really taught me a lot and enabled me to take on responsibilities. At the end of it, I was offered a student Professional training contract.
In the second semester, there is a marketing challenge which involves working in a team alongside a company, carrying out a market study. This exercise was very educational and rewarding.
In May of your first year, you have the opportunity to carry out either a Humacité© project or to work abroad, which also helps improve your language ability. I decided to find a job to improve my language level.
I headed to Northern Scotland to work on an estate, a lodge, owned by a Frenchman. Beforehand, my language ability was not very good, but in Scotland, I joined a team of 5 full-time Scots, and was offered accommodation on the estate itself. I was therefore total immersed in the language which allowed me to improve my level of English by more than 50%.

A MEMORABLE EVENT?

For me, it was Excelia and the Lions Club’s public speaking competition, the ‘concours d’éloquence’, organised by Guillaume de Saint Louvent, our oral communications teacher. This was an important event for me because, thanks to the courses offered by Guillaume de Saint Louvent, I realised that my oral fluency could be turned into a real strength and asset.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SCHOOL? WHAT HAS IT DONE FOR YOU?

I am totally satisfied with my student life at the School. The School is the perfect size and through the different clubs and associations, you can participate in the many activities on offer. The other strength of the School is that fact that you have the opportunity to be taught by teachers from the corporate world.

And after the Bachelor

AFTER THE BACHELOR, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF?

After my Bachelor in Business, I would like to join a Masters programme to do a double degree through an Engineering School and a Business School. This will take me back to my roots, having done a baccalaureate linked to architecture and construction. However, this time I will learn about construction management, sales, negotiation, consulting engineering and all the business side of the construction industry.

BY THE END OF YOUR BACHELOR, HOW MANY WEEKS/MONTHS OF INTERNSHIPS DO YOU THINK YOU WILL HAVE DONE?

By the end of my Bachelor programme, I will have carried out about 12 months of internships.

BEING SATISFIED WITH THE EDUCATION THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED UP TO NOW, HOW DO YOU THINK THE BACHELOR WILL BE AN ASSET IN THE FUTURE?

I am completely satisfied with my studies at Excelia, the teaching faculty is dynamic and highly professional, the strength of the faculty being their professional backgrounds.
The Bachelor in Business offered by Excelia is extremely well ranked which guarantees recognition in the professional world.
If, during an interview, I were asked to present my qualifications, I would simply say that in three years I have benefitted from a broad-ranging, pertinent and solid business education, as well as internship opportunities that allowed me to build my professional project.
