What is digital accessibility?

Digital accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the Web. Specifically, they can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and they can contribute to the Web.

Digital accessibility also benefits others, including the elderly whose abilities may change with age. Web accessibility encompasses all disabilities that affect access, whether they are visual, cognitive, or motor disabilities.

An accessible website allows, for example, the ability to:

  • Navigate with a screen reader and/or a braille display (particularly used by blind and visually impaired individuals)
  • Customize the site display according to needs (font enlargement, color adjustments, etc.)
  • Navigate without using a mouse (using keyboard only, via a touch screen, through voice commands, or any other adapted device)

To achieve this, the website must adhere to the relevant standards during its creation and updates.

 

Navigation Assistance by AccessiWidget

AccessiWidget enhances website accessibility for users with a wide range of disabilities (blind and visually impaired individuals, people with cognitive disorders, motor impairments, epilepsy, etc.), in compliance with WCAG 2.1 guidelines, European and French regulations (RGAA 4.1).

To accomplish this, AccessiWay combines digital accessibility consulting services with an AI-based application that runs in the background to continuously optimize accessibility levels.

Notable improvements include :

  • Screen Reader and Keyboard Navigation :

Implementation of WAI-ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes and various behavioral modifications to ensure that blind users using screen readers can read, understand, and fully utilize all site functions.

  • Keyboard Navigation Optimization :

The background process also adjusts the website's HTML code and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website usable via keyboard. This allows navigation using Tab and Shift+Tab keys, interacting with dropdown lists using arrow keys, closing them with Esc, and triggering buttons and links using the Enter key.

  • Activatable Profiles :

Epilepsy Safety Profile : This profile ensures that individuals with epilepsy can safely use the website, eliminating the risk of epileptic seizures caused by flashing animations and risky color combinations.

Visually Impaired Profile : This profile adapts the website to be accessible to a wide range of visual impairments, such as deteriorating vision, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, etc.

Cognitive Disability Profile : This profile provides various assistive functions to aid users with cognitive disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, stroke, etc., in focusing more easily on essential elements.

ADHD-Friendly Profile : This profile significantly reduces distractions and noise to help individuals with ADHD and neurological developmental disorders navigate, read, and focus on essential elements more easily.

Blind User Profile (Screen Reader) : This profile adapts the website to be compatible with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.

Motor Disability Profile (Keyboard Navigation): This profile allows individuals with reduced mobility to operate the website using keyboard shortcuts such as Tab, Shift + Tab, and Enter. Users can also use shortcuts like "M" (menus), "H" (headings), "F" (forms), "B" (buttons), and "G" (graphics) to access specific elements.

  • Additional User Interface, Design, and Readability Adjustments :

Font Adjustments : Users can increase or decrease font size, change font family (type), adjust spacing, alignment, line height, etc.

Color Adjustments : Users can choose different color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes for headings, text, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.

Animations : Users with epilepsy can stop all ongoing animations by clicking a button. Interface-controlled animations include videos, GIFs, and flashing CSS transitions.

Content Highlighting : Users can choose to highlight important elements such as links and headings. They can also choose to highlight only focused or hovered elements.

Audio Muting : Users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playback. This option allows users to instantly mute the sound of the entire website.

Cognitive Disorders : AccessiWay utilizes a search engine linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing individuals with cognitive disorders to decipher sentence meanings, initials, slang, etc.

Additional Functions : AccessiWay offers users the ability to adjust cursor color and size, use a printing mode, activate a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
